Entertainment vs. Education

“We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself, but, as it is written, the reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning that we, through patience and comfort of scriptures, might have hope.”

Romans 15:1-4

Entertainment vs Edification

Sometimes when I look at the patterns we’ve created in American society, I cringe. We pay athletes and coaches, in sports of all kinds, millions of dollars per year while our true public servants like nurses, p0lice, teachers, etc. are paid amounts that leave them unable to “make ends meet” sometimes. Are we aware of the message that we keep sending to young people?

We can enjoy good competition and the comradery that team sports can create, but can’t we prioritize a little better? Can’t we find a way to reward regular service to the community? Can’t we build up the people that build us up? Realizing that these are our choices, can we create a structure that allows what entertains us to also enrich us?

While we live in a capitalist society, everything isn’t for sale! I think we’ve sold our collective wisdom and foresight for convenience and pleasure. We’re continuously teaching our children what types of work have value to us. We reward entertainment!

Let’s do some “collective adulting” and try to achieve a better balance.
