Apocalypse Now

The last week was an interesting week. We’ve had to cut our school days in half due to the high temperatures and the state of our school buildings, which have no air conditioning. Roe vs. Wade has been overturned and there is massive excitement, good and bad, on both sides. Russia is continuing its pursuit of Ukraine while the West sends arms all while watching a massive influx of Ukrainians into Europe. Sound dramatic! That may be an understatement considering that’s only the tip of the iceberg of all that’s going on in the world.

Though I just gave a short recap from my perspective, it sounds like we are about to start living a little more honestly. Because apocalypse means unveiling or uncovering, I truly believe we’re now getting a greater opportunity to see what has been revealed. Americans’ centuries of duality and dishonesty have come to the surface. The arbitrary way we’ve honored precedent over justice, process above truth, and image over essence is no longer able to be hidden.

What we’ve called democracy has been a true tyranny of the majority. This hasn’t been one party versus another party, but one construct of “other” versus another. Often, much needed public service has gone undone to further narratives of solidarity through deceit and fear. Can we see that we’re all in need of true public servants that have the ability to stay in their lane? As a society, we’ve ignored our own contributions to the state of things. Furthermore, how can we change course without being honest about where we really are? Bigotry and fear have been nurtured at the expense of truth and faith.

If only we could be honest with ourselves? We need to face our own ways and remove childishness.
